PONDICHERRY UNIVERSITY, PONDICHERRY ( 18 seats ) *
Students admitted to the programme are eligible for the award of M.Sc degree in Biotechnology on successful completion of the course. Choice based credit system is followed in Pondicherry University where the students are at liberty to choose the courses of their interest in consultation with the Faculty Advisor. Hard core and soft core courses offered by different departments are available and the students can construct their curriculum depending upon their ambition. Courses offered during programme include Microbiology, Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Molecular Genetics, Applied and Industrial Microbiology, Molecular Plant Pathology, Immunobiology, Plant Biotechnology, Marine Biotechnology, Animal Biotechnology, r-DNA Technology, Immunotechnology, Bioprocess Technology, Bioinformatics and Pharmacokinetics. Besides credit seminar(s), the students are expected to carry out dissertation in the last two semesters. In addition to the above, the students shall undergo a 6-weeks training programme during the summer vacation in any of the reputed National Laboratories /Universities/Industries in India.
The Department has eleven faculty members and equipped with instruments necessary for advanced research in Biotechnology. Some facilities include: Equipment – Bioreactor, Blotting apparatus, Deep freezers, Ice-flaker, TG and IEF Electrophoresis, Gel Documentation system, High-speed Centrifuges, Real-Time PCR, ELISA reader, Gas Chromatography, HPLC, LCMS, Lypophilizer, UV-VIS spectrophotometer, Phase contrast microscope, Inverted microscope and Flow-cytometer, Faciliies ; Plant Tissue culture facility, Animal Cell culture facility, Biosafety facility.
The Department has received financial support from both National (DBT, DST, UGC, CSIR, AICTE and DAE) and International (Rockfeller Foundation and Danish Government funding agencies). The Department have also earned recognition for financial support through DST-FIST and UGC-SAP programmes.

2. Synthesis and characterization of nanoparticles
3. Crop improvement through genetic engineering and marker assisted breeding
4. Application of probiotics in aquaculture and food processing industries
5. Role of cell adhesion molecules in pathogenesis of Staphylococcus epidermis
6. Protein engineering
7. Hematopoietic stem cell biology
