VEER BAHADUR SINGH PURVANCHAL UNIVERSITY, JAUNPUR ( 16 seats ) *
Students admitted to the programme are eligible for the award of M.Sc. degree in Biotechnology on successful completion of the prescribed course. The syllabus is frequently revised to incorporate latest concepts and recently developed relevant technologies. It includes, First Semester: Cell Biology, Genetics & Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, and
Biophysics; Second Semester: General Microbiology, R-DNA Technology, Immunology & Immunotechnology and Biostatistics & Bioinformatics; Third Semester: Industrial Microbiology, plant & Animal Tissue Culture, Applied Molecular Biology and Environmental Biotechnology; Fourth Semester: Biochemical Engineering & Fermentation Technology and Medical Genetics,
plus a 4-month project work in a university department, biotech company or reputed national research institution (BARC, BHU,BOSE Institute, CCMB, CIMAP, CDRI, IIVR, ITRC, JNU etc.). Greater emphasis is given on Applied Molecular Biology and Microbial Technology. The entire system of evaluation is external and centrally controlled. During the project work the students
bear their personal expenses and other charges, if any, as levied by the host institutions /company. The department actively interacts with research institutions/universities for the purpose of research and training. Five out of six core faculty members have received research grants, from DST, DBT, UGC, CSIR, and CST. A seventh faculty, a Reader has been selected and is likely to join soon. The research areas include molecular genetics, microbial biodegradation, mushroom biotechnology, biodiversity etc. The department has received one-time equipment grant from the DBT and is also receiving development grants from UGC/State Govt. in different plans. The department is under consideration for up-gradation as a center for excellence
by the State government.
