The University of Burdwan was started in 1960 with its sprawling Campus in the estate of the erstwhile Maharaja of Burdwan. The M.Sc. course in Biotechnology was initiated in 2003 with the financial support of an NRI who donated two endowment chairs in the memory of his parents. The Dept. of Biotechnology, Govt. of India recognized and supported the
program from 2006. The first five batches of students passing the 2-year degree course all secured first class and many have been absorbed in different research institutes of national importance. From 2007, semester system was started. Adequate hostel facilities are available for male and female students in the campus of Burdwan University. The syllabus is similar to the DBT approved M.Sc. (Biotech General) syllabus. There is semester examination at the end of
each of the four semesters. Class tests, seminars and project / review work are mandatory for all the students

Research Programme: Plant Tissue culture, Bioremediation and Nutraceuticals microbiology & computational biology have been going on with seven Ph.D Students and the faculty members.
