Department of Biotechnology, School of Life sciences at University of Hyderabad offers the “M.Sc. Biotechnology Programme” and awards M.Sc., degree in Biotechnology to students after their successful completion
of the course. University started implementing the revised course curriculum suggested by the DBT from the academic year 2009-2010. The department offers elective courses on Protein Engineering and Protein Folding, Molecular Therapeutics, Neurogenetics, Stem cell biology, Evolutionary Genetics, Vaccines, Computational Biology, Industrial and food biotechnology.
University strictly follows academic calendar and evaluation is based on credit earned by the students.
The department has eight permanent faculty members and six more faculty members to be recruited shortly. The teaching activities of the Department are actively participated by faculty membrs from the School of Life Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Information Sciences, Chemistry and Physics.Department has strong collaboration with Centre for DNA Finger
Printing and Diagnostics and Research in teaching programs viz. M.Sc in Biotechnology and M.Tech in Bioinformatics.

The research area of the Department is focused on “Molecular Therapeutics for Infectious and Neurodegenerative Diseases”. The present research activities of the faculty including Integrated PhD in Biotechnology and Ph.D. in Biotechnology are primarily centered on understanding molecular mechanism of folding and function of proteins, the ribosome structure and
function, functional characterization of topoisomerases in HIV infection and ageing, molecular and cellular changes in cerebral ischemia and neurodegenerative diseases, molecular epidemiology and pathogenomics, vaccines, computational and functional genomics and chaperones in genome stability and chromatin remodelling. Research activities in the Department are supported by various national and international funding agencies in basic as well as applied research specially focussed on development of molecular therapeutics and nano particle based drug delivery systems for HIV, cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. Also, tissues engineering usingl stem cells. These activities provide an excellent academic program that facilitate innovative teaching and provide research orientation to the students of M.Sc. Biotechnology. Teaching laboratories of M.Sc. are well equipped and the students have access to various research laboratories and facilities like proteomics, genomics and bioinformatics infrastructure facility. Such an exposure made possible for the students securing good number of JRF fellowships and placement.
