Why CATE? 

The Combined Aptitude Test for English (CATE), introduced by the Department of English, University of Delhi in 2009, is a centralised test meant to evaluate a student’s aptitikie for the study of H (Hons) English otlered by the University From their experience, most tcacher4 ofEnglish in the colleges of’ the University of Delhi have realised that a candidate’s perlorinance in the Class Xli Lanunations is not a good indicator of hcr.his aptitude for studying literatures in English.

Until a few years back, a number of colleges offering HA( Hons) English used to admit students through entrance tests in their nspecliw colleges. However, the University administration felt that too many  individual college tests put undue pressuru on candidates, who had to run around from collcgc to college attempting these tests.

After the individual tests were scrapped. some colleges got together at the initiative of the Department of’  English, UnivLrsity of Delhi, and following long deliberations among teachers from the colleges, the  University Dqirtment and officials of the University, the Combined Aptitude Test for English (CATE)  was developed.

The inaugural CATE was held in 2009, with twelve collegesparticipiting in the process. A CATE committee was duly constituted comprising members of the University Department and teachers from colleges. Once the process begin. the Committee was ovrwhelmd by the repnse More than 00() candidates appeared for the test in 2009 and in 2011 the number had increased to nearly 10000. The number of participating colleges has also gone up to 21 (See page 10 for the list of colleges participating in CATE in
2012).
